Swap Guided and Independent Practice

During a lesson, teachers need multiple opportunities to diagnose student misunderstanding. One way to quickly gather data on student understanding is to swap guided and independent practice. Use a short independent exercise to let you know what to reteach and reemphasize prior to starting guided practice.  Some research suggests that this may also benefit student learning, as kids are able to diagnose their individual mistakes on their own, then practice with a partner.
